USA's foreign trade with Taiwan, exports to Taiwan and imports from Taiwan in September 2023

The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program.

In September Taiwan was USA's tenth most important foreign trade partner. Weakening from the previous month was 3 places. In September 2023 Taiwan represented 2.5 per cent of USA's foreign trade in goods, 1.7 % of USA's exports and 3.1 % of imports. $10.8 billion worth of trade was 0.0 per cent lower than in September of the previous year. In September the trade balance with Taiwan was $5.2 billion in deficit for United States of America.

The value of imports from Taiwan was 6.5 per cent higher than in September of the previous year, thus amounting to $8.0 billion. Major product categories of imports from Taiwan were Sitc752 (automatic data-processing machines and units thereof; magnetic or optical readers, machines for transcribing data onto data media in coded form and machines for processing such data, n.e.s.), representing 22.3 percent of imports, Sitc759 (parts and accessories (other than covers, carrying cases and the like) suitable for use solely or principally with machines falling withing groups 751 and 752) 17.8 % and Sitc764 (telecommunications equipment, n.e.s., and parts, n.e.s., and accessories of apparatus falling within division 76) 9.8 % of the imports.

The value of exports to Taiwan declined by 14.9 per cent compared to in September of the previous year, thus amounting to $2.8 billion in September 2023. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc776 (thermionic, cold cathode or photo-cathode valves and tubes (e.g., vacuum or vapour or gas-filled valves and tubes, mercury arc rectifying valves and tubes, cathode-ray tubes, television camera tubes); diodes, transistors and similar semiconductor dev), which represented a share of 14.5 per cent of total exports, Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude) 12.1 % and Sitc728 (other machinery and equipment specialized for particular industries; parts thereof, n.e.s.) 6.4 % of the exports.

Development during January-September 2023

The trade in goods between January and September of 2023 was of lesser value than in the corresponding period of the previous year. The value of the trade was $94.0 billion, down 7.7 %. During January-September the value of imports was $64.5 billion. The export value was $29.5 billion. Compared to the corresponding period in 2022, the value of imports decreased by 6.6 % and the value of exports by 10.0 %. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc759 (parts and accessories (other than covers, carrying cases and the like) suitable for use solely or principally with machines falling withing groups 751 and 752), worth $9.9 billion. In export the largest value had Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude), worth being $4.3 billion. From USA's point of view, the trade balance between the countries in January-September remained in deficit. The trade deficit was $35.0 billion. The trade deficit narrowed compared to the corresponding period in 2022. At that time, the deficit was $36.3 billion.
