USA's foreign trade with Japan, exports to Japan and imports from Japan in April 2021

The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program. The program is a test version and its rule base at this stage is still quite limited.

Trade with Japan represented in April of 2021, 5.1 per cent share of USA's foreign trade in goods, 4.4% of USA's exports and 5.5% of imports. In April Japan was USA's fourth largest foreign trade partner. Amounting trade to worth of $18.7 billion was 22.5 per cent bigger than in April of the previous year. In April the trade balance with Japan was $6.1 billion in deficit for United States of America.

The value of imports from Japan was 26.0 per cent higher than in April of the previous year, thus amounting to $12.4 billion. Major product categories of imports from Japan were Sitc781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), representing 24.5 percent of imports, Sitc784 (parts and accessories of the motor vehicles of groups 722, 781, 782 and 783) 5.2 % and Sitc778 (electrical machinery and apparatus, n.e.s.) 4.7 % of the imports.

The value of exports to Japan were 16.2 percent higher than in April of the previous year, thus amounting to $6.3 billion. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc792 (aircraft and associated equipment; spacecraft (including satellites) and spacecraft launch vehicles; parts thereof), which represented a share of 12.2 per cent of total exports, Sitc342 (liquefied propane and butane) 7.0 % and Sitc044 (maize (not including sweet corn), unmilled) 6.3 % of the exports.

Development during January-April 2021

During January-April trade in goods with Japan has grown slower than USA's trade in goods with the rest of the world. During January-April, the value of trade in goods between the two countries rose to $68.1 billion. Growth compared to the corresponding period of the previous year was 2.2 percent. During January-April the value of imports was $44.2 billion. The export value was $23.9 billion. Compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, the value of imports increased by 2.5% and the value of exports by 1.7%. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), worth $11.7 billion. In export the largest value had Sitc792 (aircraft and associated equipment; spacecraft (including satellites) and spacecraft launch vehicles; parts thereof), worth being $2.0 billion. From USA's point of view, the trade balance between the countries in January-April remained in deficit. The trade deficit was $20.3 billion. The trade deficit continued to widen compared to the corresponding period in 2020. At that time, the deficit was $19.7 billion.
