USA's foreign trade with Japan, exports to Japan and imports from Japan in February 2025


The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program.

Trade with Japan represented in February of 2025, 3.8 per cent share of USA's foreign trade in goods, 3.8 % of USA's exports and 3.9 % of imports. In February Japan was USA's sixth most important foreign trade partner. $17.5 billion worth of trade was 1.6 per cent lower than in February of the previous year. In February the trade balance with Japan was $4.7 billion in deficit for United States of America.

The value of imports from Japan decreased by 4.9 per cent compared to in February of the previous year, thus amounting to $11.1 billion in February 2025. Major product categories of imports from Japan were Sitc781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), representing 27.3 percent of imports, Sitc541 (medicinal and pharmaceutical products, other than medicaments of group 542) 5.1 % and Sitc778 (electrical machinery and apparatus, n.e.s.) 4.5 % of the imports.

The value of exports to Japan were 4.6 percent higher than in February of the previous year, thus amounting to $6.4 billion. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc342 (liquefied propane and butane), which represented a share of 10.4 per cent of total exports, Sitc792 (aircraft and associated equipment; spacecraft (including satellites) and spacecraft launch vehicles; parts thereof) 8.1 % and Sitc541 (medicinal and pharmaceutical products, other than medicaments of group 542) 5.9 % of the exports.

Development during January-February 2025

During January-February trade in goods with Japan has grown slower than USA's trade in goods with the rest of the world. During January-February, the value of trade in goods between the two countries rose to $36.4 billion. Growth compared to the corresponding period of the previous year was 0.3 percent. During January-February the value of imports was $23.9 billion. The export value was $12.4 billion. Compared to the corresponding period January - February in 2024, the value of imports during this period decreased by 1.6 %. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), worth $6.4 billion. In export the largest value had Sitc342 (liquefied propane and butane), worth being $1.1 billion. The value of exports during this period increased by 4.2 %. From USA's point of view, the trade balance between the countries in January-February remained in deficit. The trade deficit was $11.5 billion. The trade deficit narrowed compared to the corresponding period in 2024. At that time, the deficit was $12.4 billion.
