USA's foreign trade with Japan, exports to Japan and imports from Japan in Juli 2023

The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program. The program is a test version and its rule base at this stage is still quite limited.

Japan's share of USA's foreign trade in goods in Juli 2023 represented a share of 4.6 per cent. Share of USA's that month's exports was 4.0 % and 4.9 % of imports. In Juli Japan was USA's fifth most important foreign trade partner. Amounting trade to worth of $19.0 billion was 1.9 per cent bigger than in Juli of the previous year. In Juli the trade balance with Japan was $6.3 billion in deficit for United States of America.

The value of imports from Japan was 4.4 per cent higher than in Juli of the previous year, thus amounting to $12.6 billion. Major product categories of imports from Japan were Sitc781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), representing 29.3 percent of imports, Sitc723 (civil engineering and contractors' plant and equipment; parts thereof) 5.3 % and Sitc778 (electrical machinery and apparatus, n.e.s.) 4.8 % of the imports.

The value of exports to Japan declined by 2.6 per cent compared to in Juli of the previous year, thus amounting to $6.3 billion in Juli 2023. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc342 (liquefied propane and butane), which represented a share of 8.0 per cent of total exports, Sitc792 (aircraft and associated equipment; spacecraft (including satellites) and spacecraft launch vehicles; parts thereof) 5.9 % and Sitc343 (natural gas, whether or not liquefied) 4.4 % of the exports.

Development during January-Juli 2023

During January-Juli 2023, the value of trade in goods between countries was lower than during the corresponding period in the previous year. The value of the trade was $127.5 billion, a decrease of 3.4 %. During January-Juli the value of imports was $83.8 billion. The export value was $43.7 billion. Compared to the corresponding period in 2022, the value of imports decreased by 2.0 % and the value of exports by 6.0 %. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), worth $21.4 billion. In export the largest value had Sitc342 (liquefied propane and butane), worth being $3.6 billion. From USA's point of view, the trade balance between the countries in January-Juli remained in deficit. The trade deficit was $40.1 billion. The trade deficit continued to widen compared to the corresponding period in 2022. At that time, the deficit was $39.1 billion.
