USA's foreign trade with Canada, exports to Canada and imports from Canada in September 2022

The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program. The program is a test version and its rule base at this stage is still quite limited.

In September 2022 Canada represented 14.7 per cent of USA's foreign trade in goods, 17.3 % of USA's exports and 13.1 % of imports. In September Canada was USA's second most important foreign trade partner. Amounting trade to worth of $66.5 billion was 21.8 per cent bigger than in September of the previous year. In September the trade balance with Canada was $5.6 billion in deficit for United States of America.

The value of imports from Canada was 20.4 per cent higher than in September of the previous year, thus amounting to $36.0 billion. Major product categories of imports from Canada were Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude), representing 26.0 percent of imports, Sitc781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars) 5.9 % and Sitc343 (natural gas, whether or not liquefied) 3.9 % of the imports.

The value of exports to Canada were 23.5 percent higher than in September of the previous year, thus amounting to $30.5 billion.

Significant increase in trade in goods in early 2022

During January-September, trade in goods with Canada has grown faster than USA's trade in goods with the rest of the world. During this year trade in goods between countries was significantly higher than in January-September of the previous year. Growth was as high as 24.5 per cent and the value of the trade increased to $603.2 billion. During January-September the value of imports was $335.5 billion. The export value was $267.7 billion. Compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, the value of imports increased by 29.4 % and the value of exports by 18.8 %. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude), worth $89.3 billion. In export the largest value had Sitc781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), worth being $12.5 billion. From USA's point of view, the trade balance between the countries in January-September remained in deficit. The trade deficit was $67.8 billion. The trade deficit continued to widen compared to the corresponding period in 2021. At that time, the deficit was $34.0 billion.
