USA's foreign trade with Bangladesh, exports to Bangladesh and imports from Bangladesh in September 2023

The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program.

In September Bangladesh was USA's 49. most important foreign trade partner. Improvement from the previous month was 3 places. Most of the value of trade between the countries consists of the import to USA. Trade in goods between the countries of the month was considerably lower than in in September of the previous year. The value of the trade was $841 million and the drop was 31.9 %. In September the trade balance with Bangladesh was $505 million in deficit for United States of America.

The value of imports from Bangladesh decreased strongly, by 35.2 per cent compared to in September of the previous year. The import amounted to $673 million in September 2023. Major product categories of imports from Bangladesh were Sitc841 (men's or boys' coats, capes, jackets, suits, blazers, trousers, shorts, shirts, underwear, nightwear and similar articles of textile fabrics, not knitted or crocheted (other than those of subgroup 845.2)), representing 33.1 percent of imports, Sitc845 (articles of apparel, of textile fabrics, whether or not knitted or crocheted, n.e.s.) 24.2 % and Sitc842 (women's or girls' coats, capes, jackets, suits, trousers, shorts, shirts, dresses and skirts, underwear, nightwear and similar articles of textile fabrics, not knitted or crocheted (other than those of subgroup 845.2)) 14.0 % of the imports.

The value of exports to Bangladesh declined by 14.6 per cent compared to in September of the previous year, thus amounting to $168 million in September 2023. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc282 (ferrous waste and scrap; remelting scrap ingots of iron or steel), which represented a share of 37.4 per cent of total exports, Sitc263 (cotton) 14.1 % and Sitc511 (hydrocarbons, n.e.s., and their halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated derivatives) 9.1 % of the exports.

A sharp drop in trade in goods in early 2023

During January-September, trade in goods between the two countries declined sharply (-26.5 %) over the same period last year. The value of the trade was $8.1 billion. During January-September the value of imports was $6.6 billion. The export value was $1.6 billion. Compared to the corresponding period in 2022, the value of both imports and exports decreased significantly. The decline in imports was 24.2 % and in the value of exports 34.9 %. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc841 (men's or boys' coats, capes, jackets, suits, blazers, trousers, shorts, shirts, underwear, nightwear and similar articles of textile fabrics, not knitted or crocheted (other than those of subgroup 845.2)), worth $2.2 billion. In export the largest value had Sitc282 (ferrous waste and scrap; remelting scrap ingots of iron or steel), worth being $452 million. From USA's point of view, the trade balance between the countries in January-September remained in deficit. The trade deficit was $5.0 billion. The trade deficit narrowed compared to the corresponding period in 2022. At that time, the deficit was $6.2 billion.
