USA's foreign trade with South Africa, exports to South Africa and imports from South Africa in September 2023


The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program.

In September South Africa was USA's 32. most important foreign trade partner. Improvement from the previous month was 2 places. Amounting trade to worth of $2.0 billion was 18.8 per cent bigger than in September of the previous year. In September the trade balance with South Africa was $495 million in deficit for United States of America.

The value of imports from South Africa was 17.0 per cent higher than in September of the previous year, thus amounting to $1.3 billion. Major product categories of imports from South Africa were Sitc681 (silver, platinum and other metals of the platinum group), representing 22.1 percent of imports, Sitc971 (gold,non-monetary) 13.3 % and Sitc897 (jewellery, goldsmiths' and silversmiths' wares, and other articles of precious or semiprecious materials, n.e.s.) 12.2 % of the imports.

The value of exports to South Africa were 21.8 percent higher than in September of the previous year, thus amounting to $759 million. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude), which represented a share of 20.5 per cent of total exports, Sitc784 (parts and accessories of the motor vehicles of groups 722, 781, 782 and 783) 8.0 % and Sitc792 (aircraft and associated equipment; spacecraft (including satellites) and spacecraft launch vehicles; parts thereof) 7.6 % of the exports.

Development during January-September 2023

During January-September, the value of trade in goods between the two countries rose to $16.0 billion. Growth compared to the corresponding period of the previous year was 0.8 percent. During January-September the value of imports was $10.5 billion. The export value was $5.5 billion. Compared to the corresponding period January - September in 2022, the value of imports during this period decreased by 4.1 %. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc681 (silver, platinum and other metals of the platinum group), worth $2.7 billion. In export the largest value had Sitc784 (parts and accessories of the motor vehicles of groups 722, 781, 782 and 783), worth being $502 million. The value of exports during this period increased by 11.6 %. From USA's point of view, the trade balance between the countries in January-September remained in deficit. The trade deficit was $5.0 billion. The trade deficit narrowed compared to the corresponding period in 2022. At that time, the deficit was $6.0 billion.
