The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program. The program is a test version and its rule base at this stage is still quite limited.

In March Nigeria was USA's 62. most important foreign trade partner. Weakening from the previous month was 8 places. Trade in goods between the countries of the month was considerably lower than in in March of the previous year. The value of the trade was $537 million and the drop was 21.3 %. During the month, the balance of trade with Nigeria was $27 million of surplus.

The value of imports from Nigeria decreased by 21.0 per cent compared to in March of the previous year, thus amounting to $255 million in March 2022. More than half of the value of imports was in Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude) representing a share of 62.8 per cent. The second major category of imports was Sitc562 (fertilizers (other than those of group 272)), corresponding to the share of 25.6 per cent of imports.

The value of exports to Nigeria declined by 21.6 per cent compared to in March of the previous year, thus amounting to $282 million in March 2022. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), which represented a share of 21.8 per cent of total exports, Sitc334 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals (other than crude); preparations, n.e.s., containing by weight 70% or more of petroleum oils or of oils obtained from bituminous minerals, these oils being the basic constituents of the prepar) 14.2 % and Sitc041 (wheat (including spelt) and meslin, unmilled) 13.6 % of the exports.

Development during January-March 2022

During January-March trade in goods with Nigeria has grown slower than USA's trade in goods with the rest of the world. During January-March, the value of trade in goods between the two countries rose to $1.8 billion. Growth compared to the corresponding period of the previous year was 11.4 percent. During January-March the value of imports was $728 million. The export value was $1.0 billion. Compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, the value of imports increased by 6.5 % and the value of exports by 15.2 %. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude), worth $523 million. In export the largest value had Sitc781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), worth being $163 million. The trade balance between USA and Nigerian between January and March was in surplus for USA. The timing surplus was $297 million.
