USA's foreign trade with Afghanistan, exports to Afghanistan and imports from Afghanistan in September 2023

In September Afghanistan was USA's 186. most important foreign trade partner. Weakening from the previous month was 6 places. Trade in goods between the countries of the month was considerably lower than in in September of the previous year. The value of the trade was $3.1 million and the drop was 40.1 %. During the month, the balance of trade with Afghanistan was $846.8 thousand of surplus.

The value of imports from Afghanistan decreased strongly, by 73.3 per cent compared to in September of the previous year. The import amounted to $1.1 million in September 2023. Major product categories of imports from Afghanistan were Sitc057 (fruit and nuts (not including oil nuts), fresh or dried), representing 38.0 percent of imports, Sitc659 (floor coverings, etc.) 28.5 % and Sitc075 (spices) 9.0 % of the imports.

Exports to Afghanistan more than doubled from the previous year's September. The value of exports was $2.0 million. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc764 (telecommunications equipment, n.e.s., and parts, n.e.s., and accessories of apparatus falling within division 76), which represented a share of 47.0 per cent of total exports, Sitc872 (instruments and appliances, n.e.s., for medical, surgical, dental or veterinary purposes) 20.3 % and Sitc057 (fruit and nuts (not including oil nuts), fresh or dried) 7.3 % of the exports.

Development during January-September 2023

The trade in goods between January and September of 2023 was of lesser value than in the corresponding period of the previous year. The value of the trade was $32 million, down 9.8 %. During January-September the value of imports was $15 million. The export value was $17 million. Compared to the corresponding period in 2022, the value of imports decreased by 14.3 % and the value of exports by 5.2 %. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc057 (fruit and nuts (not including oil nuts), fresh or dried), worth $5.8 million. In export the largest value had Sitc022 (milk and cream and milk products other than butter or cheese), worth being $3.3 million. The domestic trade balance between the two countries was in surplus, as it had remained in deficit in January-September of the previous year. The surplus was worth $1.3 million.
