USA's foreign trade with Afghanistan, exports to Afghanistan and imports from Afghanistan in September 2022


The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program. The program is a test version and its rule base at this stage is still quite limited.

In September Afghanistan was USA's 179. most important foreign trade partner. Improvement from the previous month was 7 places. Most of the value of trade between the countries consists of the import to USA. Amounting trade to worth of $5.2 million was 379.3 per cent bigger than in September of the previous year. In September the trade balance with Afghanistan was $3.3 million in deficit for United States of America.

The value of imports from Afghanistan was 531.6 per cent higher than in September of the previous year, thus amounting to $4.3 million. More than half of the value of imports was in Sitc659 (floor coverings, etc.) representing a share of 54.9 per cent. Other major product categories of imports were Sitc667 (pearls and precious or semiprecious stones, unworked or worked), 23.4 percent of imports, Sitc896 (works of art, collectors' pieces and antiques) 5.8 % and Sitc931 (special transactions and commodities not classified according to kind) 5.1 % of imports.

Exports to Afghanistan more than doubled from the previous year's September. The value of exports was $951.2 thousand. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc776 (thermionic, cold cathode or photo-cathode valves and tubes (e.g., vacuum or vapour or gas-filled valves and tubes, mercury arc rectifying valves and tubes, cathode-ray tubes, television camera tubes); diodes, transistors and similar semiconductor dev), which represented a share of 31.9 per cent of total exports, Sitc057 (fruit and nuts (not including oil nuts), fresh or dried) 27.9 % and Sitc022 (milk and cream and milk products other than butter or cheese) 17.1 % of the exports.

A sharp drop in trade in goods in early 2022

During January-September, trade in goods between the two countries declined sharply (-85.6 %) over the same period last year. The value of the trade was $36 million. During January-September the value of imports was $18 million. The export value was $18 million. Compared to the corresponding period in 2021, the value of imports during this period increased by 5.3 %. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc659 (floor coverings, etc.), worth $6.8 million. In export the largest value had Sitc057 (fruit and nuts (not including oil nuts), fresh or dried), worth being $6.5 million. The value of exports during this period decreased by 92.4 %. The trade balance in goods between the two countries between January and September last year had been in surplus when it had a deficit in the corresponding period of the current year. The trade deficit was $587.0 thousand.
