USA's foreign trade with Iran, exports to Iran and imports from Iran in September 2023


The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program.

In September Iran was USA's 166. most important foreign trade partner. Improvement from the previous month was 24 places. Most of the the value of trade consists of USA's exports to Iran. Trade in goods between the countries of the month was considerably lower than in in September of the previous year. The value of the trade was $7.1 million and the drop was 23.4 %. During the month, the balance of trade with Iran was $5.3 million of surplus.

The value of imports from Iran decreased strongly, by 84.7 per cent compared to in September of the previous year. The import amounted to $895.0 thousand in September 2023. The main part of the import value came from 896 (Sitc works of art, collectors' pieces and antiques) imports, this representing 91.1 percent of total imports. The second major category of imports was Sitc892 (printed matter), corresponding to the share of 8.9 per cent of imports.

Exports to Iran grew strongly over the previous year's September. The value of exports was $6.2 million. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc872 (instruments and appliances, n.e.s., for medical, surgical, dental or veterinary purposes), which represented a share of 26.3 per cent of total exports, Sitc541 (medicinal and pharmaceutical products, other than medicaments of group 542) 26.0 % and Sitc774 (electrodiagnostic apparatus for medical, surgical, dental or veterinary purposes, and radiological apparatus) 19.7 % of the exports.

Development during January-September 2023

During January-September 2023, the value of trade in goods between countries was lower than during the corresponding period in the previous year. The value of the trade was $40 million, a decrease of 4.1 %. During January-September the value of imports was $1.5 million. The export value was $39 million. Compared to the corresponding period January - September in 2022, the value of imports during this period decreased by 85.8 %. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc896 (works of art, collectors' pieces and antiques), worth $1.2 million. In export the largest value had Sitc774 (electrodiagnostic apparatus for medical, surgical, dental or veterinary purposes, and radiological apparatus), worth being $12 million. The value of exports during this period increased by 24.4 %. The trade balance between USA and Iranin between January and September was in surplus for USA. The timing surplus was $37 million.
