USA's foreign trade with South Africa, exports to South Africa and imports from South Africa in February 2021


The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program. The program is a test version and its rule base at this stage is still quite limited.

In February South Africa was USA's 33. largest foreign trade partner. Decrease from the previous month was 3 places. Amounting trade to worth of $1.4 billion was 24.3 per cent bigger than in February of the previous year. In February the trade balance with South Africa was $606 million in deficit for United States of America.

The value of imports from South Africa was 45.0 per cent higher than in February of the previous year, thus amounting to $983 million. Major product categories of imports from South Africa were Sitc681 (silver, platinum and other metals of the platinum group), representing 39.0 percent of imports, Sitc971 (gold,non-monetary) 10.2 % and Sitc897 (jewellery, goldsmiths' and silversmiths' wares, and other articles of precious or semiprecious materials, n.e.s.) 9.4 % of the imports.

The value of exports to South Africa declined by 9.3 per cent compared to in February of the previous year, thus amounting to $377 million in February 2021. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc784 (parts and accessories of the motor vehicles of groups 722, 781, 782 and 783), which represented a share of 11.5 per cent of total exports, Sitc681 (silver, platinum and other metals of the platinum group) 7.8 % and Sitc667 (pearls and precious or semiprecious stones, unworked or worked) 5.7 % of the exports.

Development during January-February 2021

During January-February, trade in goods with South Africa has grown faster than USA's trade in goods with the rest of the world. During January-February, the value of trade in goods between the two countries rose to $2.6 billion. Growth compared to the corresponding period of the previous year was 15.1 percent. During January-February the value of imports was $1.8 billion. The export value was $766 million. Compared to the corresponding period in 2020, the value of imports during this period increased by 25.5 %. The largest value in imports was in Sitc681 (silver, platinum and other metals of the platinum group), worth $774 million. In export the largest value had Sitc784 (parts and accessories of the motor vehicles of groups 722, 781, 782 and 783), worth being $89 million. The value of exports during this period decreased by 4.1 %. From USA's point of view, the trade balance between the countries in January-February remained in deficit. The trade deficit was $1.1 billion. The trade deficit continued to widen compared to the corresponding period in 2020. At that time, the deficit was $669 million.
