USA's foreign trade with South Korea, exports to South Korea and imports from South Korea in September 2020

The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program. The program is a test version and its rule base at this stage is still quite limited.

Trade with South Korea represented in September of 2020, 2.9 per cent share of USA's foreign trade in goods, 3.1% of USA's exports and 2.8% of imports. In September South Korea was USA's sixth largest foreign trade partner. $9.6 billion worth of trade was 4.5 per cent lower than in September of the previous year. In September the trade balance with South Korea was $2.1 billion in deficit for United States of America.

The value of imports from South Korea was 4.2 per cent higher than in September of the previous year, thus amounting to $5.9 billion. Major product categories of imports from South Korea were Sitc781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), representing 21.0 percent of imports, Sitc759 (parts and accessories (other than covers, carrying cases and the like) suitable for use solely or principally with machines falling withing groups 751 and 752) 8.9 % and Sitc898 (musical instruments and parts and accessories thereof; records, tapes and other sound or similar recordings (excluding goods of groups 763 and 883)) 6.9 % of the imports.

The value of exports to South Korea declined by 15.6 per cent compared to in September of the previous year, thus amounting to $3.8 billion in September 2020. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude), which represented a share of 8.2 per cent of total exports, Sitc728 (other machinery and equipment specialized for particular industries; parts thereof, n.e.s.) 7.1 % and Sitc776 (thermionic, cold cathode or photo-cathode valves and tubes (e.g., vacuum or vapour or gas-filled valves and tubes, mercury arc rectifying valves and tubes, cathode-ray tubes, television camera tubes); diodes, transistors and similar semiconductor dev) 5.9 % of the exports.

Development during January-September 2020

The trade in goods between January and September of 2020 was of lesser value than in the corresponding period of the previous year. The value of the trade was $93.0 billion, down 7.0 %. During January-September the value of imports was $54.5 billion. The export value was $38.4 billion. Compared to the corresponding period in 2019, the value of imports decreased by -6.1% and the value of exports by -8.2 %. The largest value in imports was in Sitc781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), worth $11.2 billion. In export the largest value had Sitc728 (other machinery and equipment specialized for particular industries; parts thereof, n.e.s.), worth being $4.0 billion. From USA's point of view, the trade balance between the countries in January-September remained in deficit. The trade deficit was $16.1 billion. The trade deficit narrowed compared to the corresponding period in 2019. At that time, the deficit was $16.2 billion.
