USA's foreign trade with China, exports to China and imports from China in August 2020

The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program. The program is a test version and its rule base at this stage is still quite limited.

Trade with China represented in August of 2020, 16.1 per cent share of USA's foreign trade in goods, 9.3% of USA's exports and 20.1% of imports. In August China was USA's largest foreign trade partner. Most of the value of trade between the countries consists of the import to USA. Amounting trade to worth of $51.9 billion was 2.5 per cent bigger than in August of the previous year. In August the trade balance with China was $29.8 billion in deficit for United States of America.

The value of imports from China decreased by 0.8 per cent compared to in August of the previous year, thus amounting to $40.8 billion in August 2020. Major product categories of imports from China were Sitc752 (automatic data-processing machines and units thereof; magnetic or optical readers, machines for transcribing data onto data media in coded form and machines for processing such data, n.e.s.), representing 12.1 percent of imports, Sitc764 (telecommunications equipment, n.e.s., and parts, n.e.s., and accessories of apparatus falling within division 76) 11.4 % and Sitc894 (baby carriages, toys, games and sporting goods) 7.4 % of the imports.

The value of exports to China were 17.2 percent higher than in August of the previous year, thus amounting to $11.0 billion. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), which represented a share of 8.6 per cent of total exports, Sitc222 (oil-seeds and oleaginous fruits of a kind used for the extraction of *soft* fixed vegetable oils (excluding flours and meals)) 8.1 % and Sitc776 (thermionic, cold cathode or photo-cathode valves and tubes (e.g., vacuum or vapour or gas-filled valves and tubes, mercury arc rectifying valves and tubes, cathode-ray tubes, television camera tubes); diodes, transistors and similar semiconductor dev) 8.0 % of the exports.

Development during January-August 2020

The trade in goods between January and August of 2020 was of lesser value than in the corresponding period of the previous year. The value of the trade was $332.2 billion, down 10.5 %. During January-August the value of imports was $262.7 billion. The export value was $69.6 billion. Compared to the corresponding period in 2019, the value of imports decreased by -12.8% and the value of exports by -0.6 %. The largest value in imports was in Sitc764 (telecommunications equipment, n.e.s., and parts, n.e.s., and accessories of apparatus falling within division 76), worth $33.7 billion. In export the largest value had Sitc776 (thermionic, cold cathode or photo-cathode valves and tubes (e.g., vacuum or vapour or gas-filled valves and tubes, mercury arc rectifying valves and tubes, cathode-ray tubes, television camera tubes); diodes, transistors and similar semiconductor dev), worth being $7.2 billion. From USA's point of view, the trade balance between the countries in January-August remained in deficit. The trade deficit was $193.1 billion. The trade deficit narrowed compared to the corresponding period in 2019. At that time, the deficit was $231.3 billion.
