USA's foreign trade with Saudi Arabia, exports to Saudi Arabia and imports from Saudi Arabia in August 2020

The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program. The program is a test version and its rule base at this stage is still quite limited.

In August Saudi Arabia was USA's 33. largest foreign trade partner. $1.3 billion worth of trade was 38.6 per cent lower than in August of the previous year. During the month, the balance of trade with Saudi Arabia was $181 million of surplus.

The value of imports from Saudi Arabia decreased strongly, by 42.0 per cent compared to in August of the previous year. The import amounted to $562 million in August 2020. More than half of the value of imports was in Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude) representing a share of 81.9 per cent.

The value of exports to Saudi Arabia amounted to more than a third lower relative to the previous year's August, thus amounting to $743 million in August 2020. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc891 (arms and ammunition), which represented a share of 14.2 per cent of total exports, Sitc752 (automatic data-processing machines and units thereof; magnetic or optical readers, machines for transcribing data onto data media in coded form and machines for processing such data, n.e.s.) 8.0 % and Sitc781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars) 7.6 % of the exports.

Development during January-August 2020

During January-August, trade in goods between the two countries declined sharply (-25.3 %) over the same period last year. The value of the trade was $14.2 billion. During January-August the value of imports was $7.0 billion. The export value was $7.2 billion. Compared to the corresponding period in 2019, the value of both imports and exports decreased significantly. The decline in imports was -29.1 % and in the value of exports -21.2 %. The largest value in imports was in Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude), worth $5.8 billion. In export the largest value had Sitc792 (aircraft and associated equipment; spacecraft (including satellites) and spacecraft launch vehicles; parts thereof), worth being $1.4 billion. The domestic trade balance between the two countries was in surplus, as it had remained in deficit in January-August of the previous year. The surplus was worth $278 million.
