USA's foreign trade with Russia, exports to Russia and imports from Russia in August 2020

The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program. The program is a test version and its rule base at this stage is still quite limited.

In August 2020 Russia represented 0.5 per cent of USA's foreign trade in goods, 0.3 % of USA's exports and 0.6 % of imports. In August Russia was USA's 29. largest foreign trade partner. Decrease from the previous month was 2 places. Most of the value of trade between the countries consists of the import to USA. $1.6 billion worth of trade was 30.5 per cent lower than in August of the previous year. In August the trade balance with Russia was $840 million in deficit for United States of America.

The value of imports from Russia decreased strongly, by 36.6 per cent compared to in August of the previous year. The import amounted to $1.2 billion in August 2020. More than half of the value of imports was in Sitc334 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals (other than crude); preparations, n.e.s., containing by weight 70% or more of petroleum oils or of oils obtained from bituminous minerals, these oils being the basic constituents of the prepar) representing a share of 58.9 per cent. Other major categories of imports were Sitc036 (crustaceans, molluscs and aquatic invertebrates, whether in shell or not, fresh (live or dead), chilled, frozen, dried, salted or in brine; crustaceans, in shell, cooked by steaming or boiling in water, whether or not chilled, frozen, dried, salted o), 8.7 per cent of imports and Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude) 6.3 %.

The value of exports to Russia declined by 1.0 per cent compared to in August of the previous year, thus amounting to $394 million in August 2020. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc784 (parts and accessories of the motor vehicles of groups 722, 781, 782 and 783), which represented a share of 8.7 per cent of total exports, Sitc874 (measuring, checking, analysing and controlling instruments and apparatus, n.e.s.) 6.3 % and Sitc792 (aircraft and associated equipment; spacecraft (including satellites) and spacecraft launch vehicles; parts thereof) 5.3 % of the exports.

Development during January-August 2020

During January-August, trade in goods between the two countries declined sharply (-23.5 %) over the same period last year. The value of the trade was $14.1 billion. During January-August the value of imports was $11.1 billion. The export value was $3.1 billion. Compared to the corresponding period in 2019, the value of both imports and exports decreased significantly. The decline in imports was -23.2 % and in the value of exports -24.6 %. The largest value in imports was in Sitc334 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals (other than crude); preparations, n.e.s., containing by weight 70% or more of petroleum oils or of oils obtained from bituminous minerals, these oils being the basic constituents of the prepar), worth $5.0 billion. In export the largest value had Sitc792 (aircraft and associated equipment; spacecraft (including satellites) and spacecraft launch vehicles; parts thereof), worth being $226 million. From USA's point of view, the trade balance between the countries in January-August remained in deficit. The trade deficit was $8.0 billion. The trade deficit narrowed compared to the corresponding period in 2019. At that time, the deficit was $10.3 billion.
